Puff Puff Puff goes the smoke Into the morning sky It makes her want to choke Afraid she is going to die
There was a little girl Blonde hair all bedraggled and thin Without a wave or a curl Not a hairband or a pin She sat there waiting To see if it could really be true A skunk train-- she's anticipating Watching with her eyes of blue
Puff Puff Puff goes the smoke Into the morning sky It makes her want to choke Afraid she is going to die
And sure enough a train pulled up At a quarter to ten Sipping from her favorite cup She looked twice and again There amongst all of the smoke and steam A train with a skunk on its haunches did appear She smiled with her eyes all agleam "Come on momma get on the train, let's get going here."
Puff Puff Puff goes the smoke Into the morning sky It makes her want to choke Afraid she is going to die
She heard the whistle blow And saw the steam arise One thing she wanted to know Why did it hurt her eyes? And why a skunk train? She wanted to yell It was such a silly logo It was then she noticed the smell A moot question she was now willing to forgo
Puff Puff Puff goes the smoke Into the morning sky It makes her want to choke Afraid she is going to die
Why a skunk train indeed? Huge, magnificent, and clunky On her fears it began to feed Feeling like a caged up monkey For all the windows were open yet barred She felt the steam and smoke in the breeze And the seats were very hard She'd rather sit on her knees
Puff Puff Puff goes the smoke Into the morning sky It makes her want to choke Afraid she is going to die
The train continued on its path To where she did not know All of the sudden filled with wrath She didn't want to go But mother rests a hand on hers To quiet nerves and fear And all at once they dispersed When mother said, "We're here"
Puff Puff Puff goes the smoke Into the morning sky It makes her want to choke Afraid she is going to die
"Goodbye old train" the little girl said As happy as can be Without a sense of dread For a lot of lovely things she did see Thirty bridges had they crossed Though she couldn't count the trees For a moment she felt lost "A lovely time I had, let's go again." This moment mother seized "I thought you hated the train" "Nah" she replied, "He is my friend."
Puff Puff Puff goes the smoke Into the afternoon sky She didn't die, She didn't choke. She was riding high.
